Catch a Cricket.
Thought I would share a favorite book that we recently got. Untitled "Catch A Cricket", from the early 1960's it has amazingly sweet black and white photos and uses my favorite color orange throughout in the type and illustrations. Originally I picked it up for the shop, but this was one I couldn't part with. Good luck catching your fireflies & crickets this weekend. Happy Friday! p.s. we will be having a good shop update for next week, look out.
Heart Handmade
Marichelle from heart handmade did a little interview with us on her blog. You can read it here. Thanks, Marichelle for asking us to participate.
Throwing Seeds
Janet's a big gardener and me, I'm not such a big fan. I do like looking at gardens and having one in our front yard is definitely really nice but while she's really into flowers, I'd be more prone to plant something interesting like fruits or vegetables or maybe have like a really intricate goldfish pond. I also have zero experience with tending gardens.....absolutely zero. But, nevertheless, as a mother's day present to Janet, I agreed to try and fix up our garden a bit and plant some seeds that she'd saved from the flowers from last year. She wasn't around when I did it and to be honest, I didn't really know what I was doing. I'd seen a million gardening tv shows and read lots of kids books to Holly about growing carrots and things like that, but actually I'd never really planted anything before myself. But I felt like I was doing a good job. So when she came home, she seemed really impressed - there was new soil, new mulch (which I learned comes with large pieces of actual poo in it....wonderful) and in general, it cleaned up really well. So job well done. Which brings us to today - about 4 weeks later and the seedlings are coming up (see photo). Ok, so as you can see I basically just scraped a line in the dirt and threw some seeds in...and repeated...and then walked away. I guess I had in mind like how I'd seen farms plant corn and wheat - with a big tractor and people throwing seeds in. Well, we'll see how things pan out in the coming weeks, but for now it's just a bit awkward looking and I think I owe her another present.
Hooray for a long weekend!
Yesterday a friend led us to a new farmer's market near our home. Where we bought some fresh strawberries, yellow squash, some yummy horseradish cheese and Holly frolicked in some flower beds with some little friends. (This frolicking quickly ended, when I heard her say "It smells like poo" and she came out of there with a present from a dog smooshed on her tights, yuck.) On that note, I'm gathering some good recipes to make for the holiday weekend. Holly's grandpa is traveling in to visit us this weekend, so we are excited to enjoy a barbeque filled weekend with family. Look for an update to our shop on Sunday night/Monday morning. Hope you have some relaxing plans for this memorial day weekend!
Loving this.
I am in love with the work of illustrator Suzy Ultman. I just discovered her from reading design*sponge coverage from the Surtex Trade Show. Her patterns and characters are so fun and just simply lovely. Stu attended the Stationery Show in New York last weekend and brought home lots of beautiful samples, press kits and goodies. There are so much amazing work and paper goods, it's been fun to go through it all and make lists of what we want to include in the shop.
May Shop Update.
Hello. Lots of fun items added to the shop this week. Take a look around before they are gone. The rain has finally cleared for now and it is sunshine and spring weather here in the east coast. I am obsessed with gardening, now that we have one. The seeds that Holly and I planted are all coming up and growing. On our next trip to the nursery, Holly and I are going to get a peony bush to plant for our garden. I read on OhJoy! about this garden shop that just opened in Philly. It looks dreamy and oh so beautiful. (photos from OhJoy!)
Introducing...
Holly has this funny thing she likes us to do. She hides and we're suppose to say "Introducing... Holly...." like she's a circus act. She then precedes to do her thing be it jumping through a hula hoop, doing a new dance, making a funny face, or modeling a new found dress or something. So, this introduction is just to say that we have updated the shop with many new vintage items. (including this xylophone playing dog) More than forty or so items to browse, so take a look. Also, here's a little sneak peek of these amazing prints coming to the shop any day now. They are a new series that Matt Cipov did for us at Three Potato Four. We love these (and Matt) and hope you will too. Have a fantastic weekend!
Rain, Rain and...Oh yes, Rain!
We've been holding off on our weekly new product update this week...due to rain! Yes, rain. We typically photograph the week's update the week prior, but there's just be so much unprecedented gloom doom in the Virginia area that we can't catch a break with the sun. Hopefully we'll have some luck within the next day or so. On the subject of water, we recently got approached by this really cool magazine that we'd never heard of before, called Foam. It's basically an awesome girly/surf focused magazine with great design and great content and we definitely recommend checking it out.
Dance It Out
Everyone has a funny, ridiculous little dance that they do when they're at home being silly. Stu definitely has his - that make holly and i laugh and laugh and laugh. The faces that accompany these silly dances are probably the best and when he really gets into it he strains a muscle or two. Holly has picked up some dancing tips and has some strange moves now that she does. It's very entertaining. This photo was taken right after her birthday party. Thanks for all the sweet comments about our bunny Gus.
Gussy
Our sweet little girl bunny Gus died last week. Lots of crying going on by both Stu and I. She was six years old. Stu and I bought her in Harlem with her brother Barney, they were my birthday present. Gus was very loving and sweet and had a voracious appetite (just like me). Stu and I always joke that Barney and Gus took on our personalities and started to look like us. Barney being more cautious and serious and Gus more relaxed and always being hungry. We will miss her lots, especially her partner Barney, whom we are showering with lots of love and attention.

Paaaaarty!....Pizza Paaaarty!...(but no pizza)
Wow, sorry that we haven't updated this blog in almost a week. Last week was a bit hectic for us with some family things and we also spent a lot of time working on Holly's 3rd bday party, which was Saturday. Thanks to all family and friends who came out - hope everyone had fun. I admit that I was a bit overzealous when it came to the Carnival theme we had going and unfortunately fell a bit flat when it came to the balloon animals. The options were basically: sword or puppy or giraffe (puppy with long neck) and most of them didn't last more than a minute before popping or deflating. Lesson learned for future animal puppet events: hand out puppet animals as kids are leaving the party, not during. One thing that did go over pretty well was my Punch-Out game that I made out of some cardboard boxes, cardboard tubes and tissue paper (all of which are in high supply here at the headquarters). The game is a nod to one of the Price Is Right games called Punchboard or Punch-A-Bunch. The Price Is Right is a game show I hold dear to my heart, right next to Card Sharks, Classic Concentration and of course, Press Your Luck (no whammies, please). I have real nostalgia for these shows and for some reason (this is going to sound weird) every time a memory of these shows came up, I would always crave soup. I couldn't figure out why until, as I wrote this post - I remembered that the only time I ever saw these shows was when I was sick and would stay home from school and my mom would make me soup. And if that isn't the best segway ever, don't forget about Mother's Day coming up this Sunday, May 11th!
