This year is the first year I'm packing lunches for Holly. It's weird for me. I was a latch key kid, both my parents worked and I always purchased my school lunches. So I went all out and purchased a fun bento box lunchbox for, which I found there is even a
flickr group dedicated to. I try to pack her stuff she will eat but Holly has a unique palette. Some of her favorite foods are olives, spinach, any filipino food, broccoli, anything with a strong garlic flavor, sushi (california rolls mostly), and cauliflower. She won't touch a sandwich.
Stu and I think her teacher must think we pack her weird food.
Today's lunch consisted of:
-rice
-seaweed (she likes to make her own sushi)
-sauteed spinach w/ sesame oil
-cucumber slices
-oyster crackers
and a string cheese

Hurray for Holly! Here's to having kids enjoy "all foods" & not just chicken nuggets/mac n cheese...My daughter Chloe also likes quirky things- California Rolls, edamame, olives...& won't touch a sandwich most days in school-she's in 1st grade...But I love that we never say to her-don't try something because you might not like it or it's "adult food"...we encourage her to try it all...& she does....a "no thank you bite" if it's something new...
How about a cool thermos for hot foods or soup?
BTW-There's a great picture book by Rosemary Wells called Yoko...about a girl who brings sushi to school & what ensues with her classmates-a very sweet & well thought out story-I think you will enjoy it- happy reading!
We love this lunchbox. Our daughter has severe allergies, so she must take her lunch. It's also so wonderful for adults--lunch feels more fun.
To Mary, above, the same company who makes the boxes also produces a thermos (actually, 2 sizes). We'll be purchasing one soon!
